South Molle Island is another popular destination for visitors to the Whitsundays, with it’s amazing scenery, some wonderful beaches, lots of walking tracks and plenty of activities to enjoy. The resort caters exclusively to guests 18 years and older, and the island has a bit of an 18 – 30 vibe. Accommodation may not be in the “luxurious” category but it is affordable.
The two peaks on South Molle Island – Mount Jeffreys and Spion Kop – are well worth the (not too demanding) climb as you will be rewarded with absolutely spectacular views of the surrounding Whitsunday Islands and beyond. You’ll be very glad you made the effort.
Accommodation on South Molle Island
Adventure Island Resort has a selection of around 200 rooms and bungalows in four categories: Rainforest Rooms, Reef Rooms, Ocean View Rooms and Beachfront Bungalows. Pleasantly designed and furnished with an emphasis on comfort and affordability, the resort has a pool, spa, laundry facilities and internet access.
Adventure Island Resort has a range of activities to entertain it’s guests and it can arrange a number of tours and trips if you wish to venture out to neighbouring locations.
Camping is possible at the National Parks campsite in Sandy Bay, on the western side of South Molle Island. Facilities are limited. The campground can accommodate up to 36 people, permits are needed and fees do apply. More information on using the campsite and making bookings can be found on the official Queensland government website here.
Activities on South Molle Islland
Of course, all of the usual water-based activities like swimming, diving, snorkeling and sailing are extremely popular, as are the many walks through the National Park land. As previously mentioned, the views from Mount Jeffreys and Spion Kop are breath-taking and definitely worth the effort. Guests of the resort can also take advantage of it’s facilities which include tennis, basketball, squash and a gym. For golfers there is also a fairly decent nine hole golf course on the island if you feel like playing a game or two.
There is a fair choice of entertainment options, particularly at night with karaoke, live music and beach parties. You might also want to experience one of the monthly full moon parties, which are becoming increasingly popular and can result in the resort being fully booked. The island is developing a bit of a reputation for it’s party scene, so if you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing holiday there may be better options for you elsewhere.
Summary: South Molle Island is holiday destination best suited to younger (but 18+) visitors looking for somewhere to have fun that is not overrun with young children.
