The lagoon is a relatively recent addition to Airlie Beach: it was opened at the beginning of 2001 and has quickly become what could be considered the town’s focal -point. What’s more, you can enjoy all it’s charms totally free of charge
Firstly, the man-made lagoon’s four million plus litres of water provide year round stinger-free swimming: no need for stinger suits here. There is a shallow area for children while other areas are as deep as two metres, and there is a lifeguard present during the day and early evening (later at the weekend and during public holidays).
But the lagoon offers far more than just a place to cool off or to have a swim. The surrounding area is beautifully landscaped with plenty of lawn space for sunbathing, and if you would prefer to relax in a shaded area that’s catered for too.
Airlie Beach Lagoon has become the central point to hang out: it has a perfect location on the foreshore with fantastic views, and it has an excellent range of facilities which make it a hit with locals and visitors of all ages.
There are four shaded picnic areas complete with outdoor furniture settings, and six electric-barbeque sites which you can use free of charge. There are showers for rinsing-off, plenty of toilets and also a baby-changing room.
So the lagoon really is a “must-see” when you visit Airlie Beach, and you may find yourself spending more time here than you expected – enjoy!
